Directions

From Blackheath, walk north towards the park’s southern entrances; the main hill leads towards the Royal Observatory.

Greenwich Park began as part of a royal estate and served as a hunting ground for the Tudor monarchs associated with nearby Greenwich Palace. Its most famous landmark, the Royal Observatory, was founded by Charles II in 1675 to advance astronomical observations useful for navigation. The observatory later became closely associated with the Prime Meridian and Greenwich Mean Time, giving this hillside a lasting place in the history of global timekeeping. Today, the park forms part of the Maritime Greenwich UNESCO World Heritage Site. From the hill near the observatory, visitors can look across the formal landscape to the Old Royal Naval College, the River Thames and London’s skyline. Its open lawns, mature trees and spring blossoms also make it a cherished green space for Blackheath and Greenwich.

Before you enter

  • Check the park’s current closing time before an evening visit.
  • Wear comfortable shoes: the climb to the observatory viewpoint is steep.
  • For spring blossoms, plan a flexible April visit; flowering varies with the weather.

What to expect

  • The hilltop offers views across the Thames and the Old Royal Naval College.
  • Expect a mix of open lawns, tree-lined paths and formal garden areas.
  • The historic Prime Meridian is associated with the Royal Observatory, not a line running through the whole park.

During your visit

  • Pause at the viewpoint near the Royal Observatory before walking downhill.
  • Stay on marked paths in planted areas, particularly around spring blossoms.
  • Allow time to explore beyond the hilltop; quieter corners lie away from the main viewpoint.
