JORVIK takes its name from York’s Old Norse name, Jórvík. As the name implies, JORVIK Viking Centre is centered around the history of Vikings in York. Among the things that you can do there are:

  • Take a look at the Coppergate Dig. This dig provided many insights into the lives of the Vikings of York, not to mention a vast collection of priceless artifacts. In fact, JORVIK itself is located on top of the Coppergate Dig.
  • Examine authentic Viking artifacts. You can look at some of the rarest and most precious heirlooms and trinkets from the Viking Age. Shoes, padlocks, keys, combs, and even ice skates — all this and more is waiting for you at JORVIK!
  • Travel back in time to the 10th-century Viking city. Everything, from buildings to the inhabitants, is how it was a thousand years ago. While aboard the time capsules, you’ll visit houses and workshops, meet the locals, and even see the wildlife.
