Immerse yourself in the rich culture and history of Khiva through this self-guided audio tour. It reveals the stunning landmarks, artistic achievements, and architectural brilliance within Khiva's famed Ichan Kala and beyond. The journey begins at the Sheikh Kalander Bobo Madrassah near Khiva’s city walls. From there, we’ll enter Itchan Kala, the old city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you'll explore architectural masterpieces such as the Kuhna Ark, the majestic Kalta Minor Minaret, the elegant Muhammad Amin Khan Madrasah, the awe-inspiring Juma Mosque, and the beautifully decorated Toshhovli Palace. After exploring the old city, we’ll exit through the Garden Gate and continue into the outer city. Here, you can rest in the shade of city parks and experience modern Khiva beyond its ancient core. The tour concludes at the grand Nurullaboy Palace, a former royal residence reflecting Khiva’s later history and changing ties with the outside world. Along the way, marvel at delicate tilework, beautifully carved wooden columns, and majestic city gates while discovering intriguing stories about Khiva’s rulers, scholars, artisans, and connections to the Silk Road. This tour promises unforgettable views and a deep appreciation for the city’s resilience and evolution.

This self-guided audio walking tour explores the heart of Khiva’s Itchan Kala, the walled inner city, and is ideal for first-time visitors who love Silk Road history, Islamic architecture, and places that still feel enclosed by the past. You will follow the route at your own pace while the stories around each monument bring the city’s brick walls, blue tiles, and carved wood to life. The walk begins at the Kalta Minor Minaret, the unfinished turquoise tower that immediately sets the tone for Khiva’s skyline, then continues to the Mohammed Amin Khan Madrassah beside it. From there, you head to the Kuhna Ark, the old citadel of Khiva’s rulers, before crossing to the dim, atmospheric Juma Mosque with its forest of wooden columns. The route then leads east to the tiled courtyards of Toshhovli Palace and on to the Pahlavan Mahmoud Mausoleum, one of the city’s most revered shrines. Your tour ends at the Islam Khoja Minaret, the tallest minaret in Khiva, where the old city seems to gather beneath you in bands of sunlit brick and glazed blue decoration. Along the way, the most memorable moments include standing beneath the massive, cut-short Kalta Minor, stepping through palace courtyards lined with patterned ceramics, and seeing how light filters across ancient carved pillars inside the Juma Mosque.

Juma Mosque, the Friday Mosque in the heart of Khiva’s Ichan Kala, reflects centuries of religious life and woodworking in the city. Its history reaches back to the 10th century, while the present building is largely associated with the 18th century. Standing on the route between Ichan Kala’s western and eastern gates, it is one of the old city’s principal monuments. Its low, nearly windowless exterior gives little hint of the interior: more than 200 wooden pillars, carved with varied patterns, support the prayer hall. Some columns date as far back as the 10th century, preserving craftsmanship from earlier phases of the mosque’s history. Rather than a grand portal, it is this forest of timber supports that makes Juma Mosque distinctive.
Before you enter
- Check current access conditions; a recent visitor reported that part of the mosque was closed for refurbishment.
- Confirm opening hours before setting out; the listed hours are 9 am to 6 pm daily.
- Allow time to find the understated entrance—the exterior does not reveal the scale of the interior.
What to expect
- Expect a low, atmospheric hall supported by more than 200 wooden pillars.
- Look for differences in the pillars’ carving; some preserve much older craftsmanship.
- The mosque’s appeal is its interior, not a monumental facade.
During your visit
- Move slowly between the pillars to appreciate their changing patterns.
- Keep your voice low in this historic religious space.
- Respect any barriers around areas undergoing conservation.
