Directions

From Vatican City, head toward Piazza Augusto Imperatore in central Rome; look for the INPS building near the Mausoleum of Augustus.

The Mosaic of the Myth of Rome, Ferruccio Ferrazzi, is a large polychrome work on the northern façade of the INPS building at Piazza Augusto Imperatore—not in Vatican City, but in central Rome. Designed by the Roman artist for this 20th-century building, the roughly 70-square-metre mosaic presents an allegorical vision of Rome’s legendary foundation by Romulus. Its setting matters as much as its imagery: the building stands beside the ancient Mausoleum of Augustus, in an area reshaped during Mussolini’s redevelopment of the square. The nearby Ara Pacis was also reassembled as part of the effort to place ancient Roman heritage at the centre of the district. Ferrazzi’s mosaic links a modern public building to that carefully framed vision of Rome’s past.

Before you enter

  • Plan to view the mosaic from the street; it is set into the building’s exterior.
  • Use Piazza Augusto Imperatore as your landmark rather than searching within Vatican City.
  • Check the map for Via della Frezza, 8, before setting out.

What to expect

  • Look for a large, colourful composition high on the INPS building’s façade.
  • The imagery draws on the legend of Romulus and Rome’s foundation.
  • The Mausoleum of Augustus is nearby, giving the work its historical setting.

During your visit

  • Step back across the square to take in the whole mosaic.
  • Look at the artwork alongside the surrounding 20th-century architecture.
  • Be mindful of pedestrians when stopping to photograph the façade.
