Directions

From Neuilly-sur-Seine, take Métro Line 1 to Franklin D. Roosevelt, then Line 9 to Iéna; walk to the museum.

Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris occupies the eastern wing of the Palais de Tokyo, built for the 1937 International Exposition in Paris. The museum opened in 1961 and presents the city’s collection of modern and contemporary art. Its galleries trace major developments in 20th-century painting and sculpture, including Fauvism, Cubism, and abstraction. A highlight is Henri Matisse’s monumental *La Danse*; works by Robert and Sonia Delaunay are also among the collection’s draws. The building’s broad, light-filled spaces give large works room to breathe, while changing exhibitions connect the permanent collection with later artists and ideas. Despite the shared building, the museum is separate from the neighboring Palais de Tokyo contemporary art center.

Before you enter

  • Check current opening hours before leaving; the museum is normally closed on Mondays.
  • Check the museum website for changes to Thursday evening hours.
  • Plan extra time if a special exhibition interests you; popular shows may require advance reservations.

What to expect

  • The permanent collection is generally free to enter.
  • Expect spacious galleries devoted to 20th-century art, alongside changing exhibitions.
  • Allow about 60–90 minutes for a focused visit to the permanent collection.

During your visit

  • Look for Matisse’s *La Danse* and works by Robert and Sonia Delaunay.
  • Read gallery labels to follow the shifts between artistic movements.
  • Leave time to appreciate the Palais de Tokyo building as well as the artwork.
