Directions
Palácio do Raio was built in the mid-18th century as the home of João Duarte de Faria, a wealthy merchant in Braga. Designed by André Soares, it is one of the city’s most striking examples of Portuguese Baroque architecture. Its elaborate stonework frames sweeping windows and doorways, while the blue azulejo tiles that now define its street-facing façade were added later. The contrast makes the building memorable even on a brief walk through the city centre. Over time, the palace passed from private use to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Braga, a charitable institution with a long local history. Today, its interiors and exhibitions offer a way to explore that history alongside the building’s architectural details.
