Astorga: Episcopal Palace Ticket & Gaudi Audi...

Discover the tales of the Episcopal Palace of Astorga, known also as Palacio Gaudi, guided by this engaging in-app audio tour. You will find yourself in one of the few buildings designed by Antonio Gaudí outside Catalonia. This is a magnificent neo-Gothic building with features of a castle, temple, and stately palace, surrounded by a moat. Located on the route to Santiago de Compostela, the Palace houses the Museo de los Caminos, where you'll learn about the history of one of the oldest dioceses in Spain through an evocative art collection. In the Low Level of the Palace, you will marvel at the vaults decorated with glazed ceramics as well as the capitals, the mesulones, and the curious stained glass windows. Continuing your tour in the Basement of the Palace, you will discover epigraphic, numismatic, and lapidary collections. On the First Floor, you will examine starry capitals that are like the capitals of the Sainte Chapelle in Paris and incredible stained glass windows. Enjoy both the Palace with its magnificent architecture and the Museum with its unique religious heritage! Note! This tour is not affiliated with The Astorga Episcopal Palace but is provided by an independent creator.

Astorga: Episcopal Palace Ticket & Gaudi Audio Tour
We loved this experience and it was useful having an audio guide. We have found the absence of English being spoken in tourist sites in this region difficult. The interior of the palacio swept us away. Well worth visiting

Directions

Palacio Gaudí stands beside Astorga Cathedral on Plaza Eduardo de Castro, a short walk from Astorga’s historic center.

Palacio Gaudí in Astorga is the bishop’s palace designed by Antoni Gaudí, one of his rare works outside Barcelona. Construction began in 1889 and the building was completed in 1913, though Gaudí stopped overseeing the project in 1893. The palace is notable for blending medieval-inspired Gothic forms with Gaudí’s distinctive modernist imagination, visible in its turrets, stone façade, pointed arches, and richly shaped interiors. Built as an episcopal residence, it later took on a cultural role and today houses a museum of religious art. In Astorga, the palace is one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks, valued both for its architectural originality and for showing how Gaudí adapted his style to the historic setting of León province.

Before you enter

  • Check the split daily opening hours before visiting; the palace closes midday.
  • Wear comfortable shoes for stairs and interior walking.
  • Bring a camera or phone for exterior details and rooftop views.
  • Pair your visit with nearby Astorga Cathedral for an easy historic stop.

What to expect

  • Expect a compact visit focused on architecture and religious art.
  • You’ll see Gothic-inspired spaces mixed with Gaudí’s modernist design.
  • The exterior is as striking as the museum rooms inside.
  • Many visitors spend about 30 to 60 minutes here.

During your visit

  • Look closely at windows, arches, and stonework for Gaudí’s signature touches.
  • Start with the exterior façade before entering the museum rooms.
  • Visit early in the day for quieter galleries and easier photos.
  • Allow extra time if you want to enjoy the terrace and surrounding views.
