Directions

In central Padua, walk to Piazza delle Erbe; the palazzo stands between it and Piazza della Frutta.

Palazzo della Ragione has been at the heart of Padua’s civic life since the Middle Ages. Built in the early 13th century, it housed the city’s courts and public administration, while market stalls filled the spaces below. Its enormous upper hall, known as the Salone, is a striking expression of the city’s former wealth and independence. A fire in 1420 destroyed much of the original decoration; the frescoes visitors see today form a later cycle rich in astrological imagery. Look up, too, at the sweeping wooden roof, often compared to an overturned ship’s hull. Between Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza della Frutta, the building remains closely connected to everyday market life.

Before you enter

  • Check current opening hours before you go; the listed schedule shows the upper hall closed on Mondays.
  • Allow time to explore the market beneath the palazzo as well as the hall upstairs.
  • Visit Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza della Frutta to appreciate the building from both sides.

What to expect

  • The Salone is a vast, mostly open space; its scale, roof and frescoes are the main attractions.
  • The ground-floor market has a different atmosphere from the quieter historic hall above.
  • Look for astrological subjects across the frescoed walls.

During your visit

  • Step back from the walls to take in the fresco cycle as a whole.
  • Pause in the center of the hall to appreciate the span of the wooden roof.
  • Afterward, compare the palazzo’s two long façades from the surrounding squares.
