Madrid: Prado Museum Ticket & City Sights Audio Tour
This museum is big!! We opted for the audio guide that you can purchase after entry. It has several different audio guides tours you can do depending on your interest. There is a 9 hour tour!!! More realistically they offer a 1, 2 or 3 hour audio guided tour and you can switch between the tours which was really convenient. There is a lot of walking due to the layout and size of the museum and the rooms are not all identified. However, there are staff in most every room and they were very helpful in directing us. Highly recommended. Comfortable 2 hours

Directions

Palacio Real de Madrid stands on Calle de Bailén in central Madrid, beside Plaza de Oriente and near Almudena Cathedral.

Palacio Real de Madrid is the grand 18th-century royal palace built after Madrid’s old Alcázar was destroyed by fire in 1734. Constructed for the Bourbon monarchy, it became the ceremonial seat of Spanish kings from Carlos III onward and remains the official royal residence for state occasions rather than everyday living. Its architecture reflects a monumental blend of Baroque grandeur and classical order, fitting its prominent position above the city. Inside, visitors encounter lavish state rooms, major staircases, decorative arts, antiques, and artworks that express the wealth and political symbolism of the Spanish crown. As one of Madrid’s defining landmarks, the palace also serves as a key symbol of Spain’s monarchy, court culture, and national heritage.

Before you enter

  • Arrive at opening time for a calmer visit and clearer photos of the grand exterior.
  • Check the day’s opening hours, as Sunday closing time is earlier than other days.
  • Wear comfortable shoes; palace interiors and surrounding squares involve extended walking.
  • Bring a light layer, as large stone interiors may feel cooler than outside.

What to expect

  • Expect richly decorated rooms with varied styles, colors, art, and antique furnishings.
  • The palace is monumental in scale, with impressive ceremonial spaces and grand staircases.
  • Security and entry lines may add waiting time, especially late morning and midday.
  • The setting offers sweeping views from its ridge-top position in central Madrid.

During your visit

  • Pause in major halls to notice ceiling decoration, furniture, and symbolic royal details.
  • Move steadily through popular rooms to avoid bottlenecks and enjoy quieter corners later.
  • Look outside as well; Plaza de Oriente and nearby cathedral views complement the palace visit.
  • If timing aligns, watch for the changing of the guard outside for added atmosphere.
