Directions

From Şişli–Mecidiyeköy, take the M2 metro to Taksim; the station exits lead directly to the square.

Taksim Square takes its name from a water-distribution point that once served this part of Istanbul; “taksim” means “division” or “distribution” in Turkish. Its best-known landmark is the Republic Monument, unveiled in 1928, which commemorates the founding of the Turkish Republic and depicts Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. The square has long been a setting for public celebrations, gatherings, and demonstrations, giving it a prominent place in the city’s civic life. İstiklal Avenue begins here, while Gezi Park borders the square to the north. Although visitors may approach from nearby Şişli, Taksim Square itself is in Beyoğlu. Today, its metro connections and surrounding streets make it a useful starting point for exploring central Istanbul.

Before you enter

  • Check the weather: the square is open-air, with limited shelter from rain or strong sun.
  • Choose a meeting point, such as the Republic Monument, if visiting with others.
  • Use Taksim metro station to avoid navigating the surrounding traffic.

What to expect

  • Expect a large urban square rather than an enclosed attraction.
  • Look for the Republic Monument near the center and Gezi Park to the north.
  • İstiklal Avenue offers a natural route for continuing your walk.

During your visit

  • Stay aware of trams and vehicles as you move into the surrounding streets.
  • Keep personal belongings close in crowded areas.
  • Leave extra time if a public gathering changes pedestrian routes.
