Directions

The Shard stands beside London Bridge station on London Bridge Street, just across the Thames from the City of London.

Designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano and completed in 2012, The Shard transformed the skyline around London Bridge. Its tapering glass form rises above Southwark, across the Thames from the City of London, giving the skyscraper its distinctive splinter-like silhouette. The building brought offices, restaurants and a hotel together in one landmark, reflecting a period of major redevelopment around London Bridge station. Its viewing platform, which opened in 2013, made the height and shape of the building part of a public experience rather than simply a feature of the skyline. From the upper floors, visitors can trace the Thames past familiar landmarks and see how historic London sits alongside its newer towers.

Before you enter

  • Check the weather forecast; low cloud or heavy rain can obscure distant landmarks.
  • Allow extra time around London Bridge station, where several exits serve the surrounding streets.
  • If you want sunset views, check the sunset time for your visit date.

What to expect

  • The viewing areas offer wide panoramas through large glass windows.
  • The upper Skydeck has an open-air section, so it may feel cooler or windier.
  • There is a bar at the top, which can draw people who stay for drinks and sunset.

During your visit

  • Look downriver and upriver to follow the Thames through central London.
  • Move around the viewing area; each side frames a different part of the city.
  • For clearer photos, look for a clean section of glass and hold your camera close to it.
