Don't go in July. Too hot. Go very early or later in the day.

we got the vatican museum tickets the day before. came to a meet up point, picked up the tickets, had to wait in a separate line at the entrance for a few minutes and we were in. the tickets are obviously pricier than the official ones, but if you want to make a last minute visit it is worth it.
