Directions

Basilika St. Ulrich und Afra is at Ulrichsplatz 19, within walking distance of Augsburg’s old town.

Basilika St. Ulrich und Afra is one of Augsburg’s most important historic churches. Dedicated to Afra, an early Christian martyr associated with the city, and Ulrich, Augsburg’s tenth-century bishop, it has long been a place of worship and remembrance. The present Gothic church took shape on fifteenth-century foundations and was associated with a Benedictine abbey. Its soaring interior contrasts with the richly worked furnishings, including carved altars and a prominent organ. Outside, the approximately 93-metre bell tower, crowned by an onion dome, is a distinctive feature of Augsburg’s skyline. The basilica’s long religious history and architecture make it rewarding to visit even if you have only a short time in the old town.

Before you enter

  • Check current access before visiting; services and special events may affect sightseeing.
  • Plan to enter quietly: this remains an active place of worship.
  • Allow time to see the façade and onion-domed tower from Ulrichsplatz.

What to expect

  • Expect a spacious Gothic interior with ornate altars and an organ.
  • Scaffolding or restoration work may temporarily obscure parts of the church.
  • A short visit works well, but the interior rewards a slower look.

During your visit

  • Pause near the entrance to take in the scale of the nave.
  • Look closely at the carved details of the altars.
  • Keep noise low, particularly when worshippers are present.
  • Follow any posted guidance on photography and restricted areas.
