Directions

From Milano Porta Garibaldi station, walk past Piazza Gae Aulenti toward Via Gaetano de Castillia.

Bosco Verticale, or “Vertical Forest,” is a pair of residential towers completed in 2014 in Milan’s Porta Nuova district. Designed by Stefano Boeri Architetti, the buildings rose as part of the area’s transformation from former railway and industrial land into a new urban neighborhood. Their planted balconies carry trees, shrubs, and smaller plants, turning the facades into a changing landscape rather than a conventional skyline. The vegetation provides shade and habitat for birds and insects, while giving the towers a different appearance with each season. The project won the 2014 International Highrise Award and became an influential example of integrating greenery into dense urban housing. Because the towers are private homes, their architecture and planting are best appreciated from the surrounding public streets and squares.

Before you enter

  • Plan to view Bosco Verticale from public areas; the towers are private residential buildings.
  • Check the weather before setting out, especially if you want to photograph the planted facades.
  • Wear comfortable shoes to explore the surrounding Porta Nuova streets on foot.

What to expect

  • Look for two towers with balconies densely planted at different heights.
  • The greenery changes color and density with the seasons.
  • Nearby modern buildings provide a striking contrast to the planted facades.

During your visit

  • Stay on public paths and respect residents’ privacy.
  • Step back from the buildings to fit both towers into a photograph.
  • Walk around the block to see how the balconies and plants change from different angles.
