About Chapel of the Holy Shroud

The Chapel of the Holy Shroud (Cappella della Sacra Sindone) is part of the Royal Museums of Turin and is open Tuesday through Sunday from 09:00 AM to 07:00 PM. It is closed on Mondays, December 25, and January 1.

Being part of a huge museum complex, the Chapel of the Holy Shroud cannot be visited separately. It is better to plan your tour for a day when you have enough time to explore the Royal Palace and other museums along with the chapel. The whole place tends to be more crowded on Tuesday, Saturday, and Sunday, so try to avoid these days.

    • Admire the spectacular architecture

The Chapel of the Holy Shroud is a great example of admirable Baroque architecture. The most spectacular part of the building is its dome, which consists of a succession of hexagonal zones becoming progressively smaller. The space looks extraordinary due to this telescopic progression of arches and the light that glares through the dome's windows.

    • Immerse yourself in the mysterious atmosphere

The chapel, located outside the Turin Cathedral and connected to the Royal Palace, was built in the late 17th century to house the Shroud of Turin. The precious religious relic, now kept in the cathedral's transept, had been housed there for three centuries. In 1997 the chapel was affected by a huge fire that heavily damaged the building, but after over 20 years, it was restored and finally reopened to the public.

The Chapel of the Holy Shroud is located in the historic center of Turin, at Piazza San Giovanni, but the only way to get there is from the inner courtyard of the Royal Palace. The closest bus and light rail stops are Castello and Duomo. If traveling by train or subway, get off at Porta Nuova and take a 15-minute walk to Piazza Castello and the Royal Palace.
