Vienna's Historic Highlights with St. Stephen Cathedral Ticket
It was awesome. The audio-guide very good, the man that guided us to the catacombs very vivid and helping. The only bad thing was the bad smell of horses that entered the monument.

Vienna's Historic Highlights with St. Stephen Cathedral Ticket
Saint Stephen’s Cathedral is magnificent and the audio tour very interesting. I also appreciated the elevator to the top of the tower since I could not walk the steps. The view there is fantastic over the city as well as close to the roof tiles.I did not have sufficient time to see the catacombs or other things included in the ticket. I think it was worth the cost even though there were no lines when I arrived.I did however, find it quite confusing to locate the Dome museum, where you had to exchange the voucher for a real ticket. That is partly because of the way the door is painted so it blends into the wall. A friendly local helped me find it!

Directions

Find the Column of Pest on Graben in central Vienna, a short walk from Stephansplatz.

The Column of Pest, or Pestsäule, is one of Vienna’s best-known Baroque monuments, standing on the Graben in the historic city center. It was commissioned after the devastating 1679 plague epidemic as a thanksgiving memorial and a public expression of faith and survival. Completed in the late 17th century, the monument is dedicated to the Holy Trinity and rises in a dramatic swirl of clouds, angels, saints, and gilded details. More than a memorial to plague victims, it became a symbol of Vienna’s resilience and Catholic identity in the Habsburg era. Its richly theatrical sculpture makes it both an important historical monument and one of the most striking street landmarks in Vienna today.

Before you enter

  • Check the weather; the monument is outdoors and best appreciated in dry conditions.
  • Visit early for clearer photos before Graben fills with shoppers and passersby.
  • Pair your stop with nearby Stephansplatz and central Vienna sights.
  • Bring a zoom lens or phone camera for the intricate gilded details.

What to expect

  • Expect a large Baroque column filled with angels, clouds, and religious symbolism.
  • The Column of Pest stands in a busy pedestrian area, not a quiet enclosed site.
  • You can view it at any time since the monument is accessible 24 hours.
  • The setting is ideal for quick sightseeing, photos, and a short historical stop.

During your visit

  • Walk around the monument to appreciate different sculptural angles and details.
  • Look up carefully; many of the finest figures and gold accents are high above.
  • Visit again after dark for a more dramatic atmosphere and lighting.
  • Stay aware of pedestrian traffic on Graben while stopping for photos.
