Directions

From Adams Morgan, head to 1703 32nd St NW in Georgetown; the museum entrance is on 32nd Street.

Dumbarton Oaks was the Washington home of collectors and patrons Robert and Mildred Bliss, who gave the property and their collections to Harvard University in 1940. Today, its museum and research library are known for Byzantine and pre-Columbian studies, with galleries displaying objects from both traditions. Landscape architect Beatrix Farrand designed the terraced gardens, while Philip Johnson designed the distinctive pavilion for the pre-Columbian collection. Dumbarton Oaks also played a role in diplomatic history: in 1944, representatives of the Allied powers met here for talks that helped shape the United Nations. Though it is an easy outing from Adams Morgan, the estate sits in Georgetown and offers a more intimate setting than Washington’s largest museums.

Before you enter

  • Check current opening hours before setting out; the listed schedule closes on Mondays.
  • Plan separate time for the museum and gardens, which may have different entrances or access arrangements.
  • Wear comfortable shoes if you intend to explore the terraced gardens.

What to expect

  • Expect a relatively small museum with notable Byzantine and pre-Columbian collections.
  • Look for the Philip Johnson–designed pavilion housing pre-Columbian works.
  • The gardens are extensive and include steep sections.

During your visit

  • Start in the galleries if you want a quieter look at the displays.
  • Take time to examine the coin and medallion displays mentioned by visitors.
  • Ask staff for directions if you are unsure how to reach the gardens.
