Directions

From Rosslyn, cross Key Bridge into Georgetown, follow M Street to 31st Street NW, then walk north to Tudor Place.

Tudor Place is a historic Georgetown home completed in 1816 for Martha Parke Custis Peter, a granddaughter of Martha Washington, and her husband, Thomas Peter. Although it appears on a Rosslyn itinerary, the house stands across the Potomac in Washington, DC. The property remained in the Peter family for generations, preserving a record of changing American domestic life into the 20th century. Its collections include objects dating from the 1700s to the 2000s, linking the founding era with later family history. The gardens add another dimension to the estate, while the house’s interpretation considers the people who worked there as well as those who owned it. Together, the residence, collections, and grounds offer a layered view of Georgetown’s past.

Before you enter

  • Check current opening hours; Tudor Place is usually closed Mondays and opens at noon on Sundays.
  • Allow time to cross the Potomac if you’re coming from Rosslyn.
  • Wear comfortable shoes for the house and garden paths.

What to expect

  • Expect a historic home rather than a large museum building.
  • Look for objects from several centuries of family history.
  • The gardens are a substantial part of the visit, not just a backdrop.

During your visit

  • Notice how rooms and objects reflect different generations of the Peter family.
  • Consider the lives of household workers alongside those of the home’s owners.
  • Make time to walk through the gardens.
  • Check on-site guidance before photographing interiors.
