Directions

From Rosslyn, cross Key Bridge into Georgetown and follow M Street NW west toward 36th Street NW.

The Exorcist Steps are a public staircase in Georgetown, Washington, DC, across the Potomac from Rosslyn. They became a film landmark after appearing in the climactic sequence of *The Exorcist*, the 1973 horror film in which Father Karras makes his dramatic descent. The steep flight has since drawn visitors who want to recognize the setting in person, whether or not they climb it. A plaque at the bottom marks its connection to the movie. Visitors often look for the house associated with the film near the top of the stairs, too. What makes the spot memorable is the contrast between an ordinary neighborhood passageway and its lasting place in horror-film culture.

Before you enter

  • Check the weather; steep steps may be slippery when wet.
  • Wear shoes with good grip if you plan to climb.
  • Approach from M Street NW to find the plaque at the bottom.

What to expect

  • This is a public staircase, not an indoor attraction.
  • The climb is steep, but the visit itself can be brief.
  • The film-associated house is near the top of the steps.

During your visit

  • Use the handrail and take your time on the descent.
  • Leave room for people using the stairs as a passageway.
  • After dark, watch your footing and be considerate of nearby residents.
