Directions

From central Comillas, walk toward Sobrellano and follow signs to El Capricho de Gaudí at Barrio Sobrellano, s/n.

Built between 1883 and 1885 as a summer residence, El Capricho de Gaudí is one of Antoni Gaudí’s early works and a rare example of his architecture outside Catalonia. It was designed for Máximo Díaz de Quijano, whose interest in music is reflected in details throughout the house. In Comillas, the building stands out for its colorful ceramic decoration, including sunflower motifs, and a tower inspired by Persian minarets. Its playful combination of forms and materials hints at the distinctive architectural language Gaudí would develop in later projects. Rather than resembling a conventional seaside chalet, El Capricho brings together ornamental flourishes and imaginative design, making it an important stop for understanding the beginnings of his career.

Before you enter

  • Check current opening hours before setting out; seasonal schedules may differ.
  • Allow time to explore the surrounding Sobrellano area as well as the house.
  • Bring a light layer: Comillas weather can change quickly.

What to expect

  • The house is compact, so focus on its details rather than expecting a large mansion.
  • Look for sunflower ceramics on the exterior.
  • Notice how the Persian-inspired tower changes the building’s silhouette.

During your visit

  • Take a slow circuit around the outside to see the decoration from different angles.
  • Look for design details connected to the original resident’s love of music.
  • Be considerate in narrower interior spaces so others can see the features too.
