Opened in 1898, the Ferry Building was once San Francisco’s principal gateway for passengers arriving by boat from across the bay. Its prominent clock tower and long interior hall made it a waterfront landmark as well as a working transit hub. Ferry traffic declined after the Bay Bridge and Golden Gate Bridge opened in the 1930s, but the building remained part of the city’s daily life. A major restoration brought new purpose to the historic space, which reopened as a public marketplace in 2003. Today, food stalls, cafés, and local producers fill the hall, while ferries still dock behind it. The building links San Francisco’s maritime past with its contemporary food culture and offers views across the bay.
Before you enter
- Check individual shop hours; the building may be open before many vendors start serving.
- Bring a reusable bag if you plan to shop at the farmers market.
- Wear a layer for the waterfront breeze, even on a sunny day.
What to expect
- Expect a restored interior hall lined with food vendors and specialty shops.
- The Saturday farmers market draws additional vendors and larger crowds.
- Step outside on the bay side for views of the water and Bay Bridge.
During your visit
- Walk the full length of the hall before choosing where to eat.
- Leave room for ferry passengers moving through the building.
- Take your food outside if you want a break from the indoor bustle.
