Directions

Take the Tube to Hyde Park Corner for the southeast entrance or Lancaster Gate for the north side.

Hyde Park began as a royal hunting ground after Henry VIII acquired the land in 1536. Charles I opened it to the public in the 17th century, and it gradually became one of London’s most important places for recreation and public life. The Serpentine was created in the 1730s and remains a focal point for waterside walks, boating and swimming. In 1851, the park hosted the Great Exhibition in the Crystal Palace, drawing visitors from across the world. Speakers’ Corner later became a symbol of public debate and free expression. Today, Hyde Park offers the City of Westminster expansive lawns, tree-lined paths and the Diana Memorial Fountain: a green space shaped by centuries of London history.

Before you enter

  • Choose an entrance near the feature you want to see; the park is large.
  • Check conditions before visiting: open lawns offer little shelter in rain or strong sun.
  • Wear comfortable shoes if you plan to walk around the Serpentine.
  • Check current opening times for cafés, boating or swimming separately from park hours.

What to expect

  • Expect broad lawns, mature trees and a mix of busy routes and quieter paths.
  • The Serpentine is a natural focus for a walk, with birds and boats on the water.
  • The Diana Memorial Fountain is an open-air feature beside the park’s walking routes.
  • Walking distances can be longer than they appear on a map.

During your visit

  • Follow the lakeside path for scenery, then turn inland for a quieter walk.
  • Keep food secure around birds and give wildlife space.
  • Use marked paths when cycling and be considerate of pedestrians.
  • Check signs before entering the water; swimming is limited to designated areas and times.
