About Royal Albert Hall

Address

Kensington Gore, South Kensington, London SW7 2AP, UK
Open in Google Maps

Best time to visit

Visit on a weekday morning for exterior views, or during the summer Proms season for a performance.

Crowd level

With over 48,000 Google reviews and accounts of popular performances, plan 2–3 weeks ahead for an event; weekday mornings are quietest for viewing the exterior.

Directions

From South Kensington station, follow Exhibition Road north, then turn left onto Kensington Gore; allow about 15 minutes.

The Royal Albert Hall opened in 1871 as part of Prince Albert’s vision for a district devoted to arts and science. Queen Victoria named it in memory of her husband, who had died a decade earlier. Its vast oval auditorium, red-brick and terracotta exterior, and glass-and-iron dome make it one of London’s most recognisable Victorian buildings. The decorative frieze around its exterior celebrates the arts and sciences. Since 1941, the Hall has hosted the BBC Proms, cementing its place in British musical life. Its programme has also embraced rock, film, comedy, and major public occasions. Set on Kensington Gore in the City of Westminster, it faces the Albert Memorial across the road.

Before you enter

  • Check the day’s programme; access to the auditorium depends on scheduled events.
  • Check the venue’s current bag and security rules before setting out.
  • Allow extra time to find the correct entrance for your event.

What to expect

  • Look for the oval shape, terracotta detailing, and prominent dome.
  • Expect a varied programme, from classical music to contemporary performances.
  • The Albert Memorial and Kensington Gardens are just across Kensington Gore.

During your visit

  • Look up at the decorative frieze encircling the building.
  • Follow staff guidance on photography; rules may vary by event.
  • Keep aisles and entrances clear, especially as audiences arrive and leave.
