Il-Berġa ta' Kastilja, also known as the Auberge de Castille, stands near the entrance to Valletta, a short walk from Floriana. It was originally built to house knights of the Order of St John from the langue of Castile, León and Portugal. The building was rebuilt in the 1740s in the Baroque style, giving it the imposing, richly detailed façade seen today. Its prominent position near the Upper Barrakka Gardens made it a conspicuous part of the city’s ceremonial landscape. Now home to the Office of the Prime Minister of Malta, the former knights’ residence connects the island’s Hospitaller past with its modern government. Even without going inside, visitors can appreciate its grand exterior and the historic cannons nearby.
