Directions

From Floriana, enter Valletta through City Gate and walk toward Castille Place; Upper Barrakka is nearby.

Upper Barrakka Gardens sit atop Valletta’s fortifications, a short walk from Floriana and high above the Grand Harbour. Created in the 17th century as a private retreat for the Knights of St John, the gardens later opened to the public and became one of Malta’s best-known viewpoints. Their arcaded terrace frames the harbour, Fort St Angelo, and the Three Cities: Vittoriosa, Senglea, and Cospicua. Below the gardens, the Saluting Battery recalls the harbour’s military past; ceremonial cannon firings still draw spectators. Today, the shaded paths, monuments, and café make Upper Barrakka more than a lookout: it is a place to pause amid Valletta’s historic streets and consider how the port shaped the island’s life.

Before you enter

  • Bring water and sun protection; the viewing terrace is exposed.
  • Check the Saluting Battery’s current firing schedule if you hope to see a cannon salute.
  • Charge your phone or camera for wide harbour views.

What to expect

  • Look across the Grand Harbour toward Fort St Angelo and the Three Cities.
  • Expect more people near the terrace when a cannon firing approaches.
  • The gardens offer shaded places to pause and a café.

During your visit

  • Walk beneath the arcades for different views of the harbour.
  • Step back from the terrace to enjoy the gardens when the viewpoint is crowded.
  • Allow time to identify Vittoriosa, Senglea, and Cospicua across the water.
