Legion of Honor: Entry Ticket
The only negative that I had was the menu at the cafe. Some salads were not even given crackers nor even a dinner bun. At the prices they are charging think it would not have been unreasonable..The Morrisot/Manet exhibition was beautifully executed. Thank you.

Directions

The Legion of Honor is at 100 34th Avenue in San Francisco’s Lincoln Park; Muni’s 18 bus serves the area.

The Legion of Honor opened in 1924 as a memorial to Californians who died in World War I. San Francisco patron Alma de Bretteville Spreckels championed the museum, whose neoclassical building was inspired by the Palais de la Légion d’Honneur in Paris. Set in Lincoln Park above the Pacific, it pairs art with views toward the Golden Gate Bridge. Its collections are especially strong in European painting and sculpture, with ancient Mediterranean art and works on paper also represented. A cast of Auguste Rodin’s The Thinker greets visitors in the courtyard, introducing the museum’s connection to French art before they step inside. Alongside the de Young, the Legion of Honor forms part of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.

Before you enter

  • Check current opening hours before setting out.
  • Bring a layer: the headland can be windy and cool.
  • Allow extra travel time if coming from central San Francisco.

What to expect

  • Look for Rodin’s The Thinker in the courtyard.
  • Expect European art alongside ancient objects and works on paper.
  • Leave time for views around Lincoln Park when skies are clear.

During your visit

  • Start with the galleries that interest you most; rotating exhibitions may change what is on view.
  • Take breaks between galleries to appreciate the building’s neoclassical design.
  • Follow posted photography rules, which may differ between galleries and exhibitions.
