Directions

Lisbon Cathedral stands in Alfama at Largo da Sé 1, easily reached on foot from central Lisbon.

Lisbon Cathedral, also known as Sé de Lisboa, is one of the city’s oldest and most important religious monuments. Built after the Christian reconquest of Lisbon in the 12th century, it has been reshaped repeatedly by earthquakes and later restorations, which explains its mix of architectural styles. Its fortress-like Romanesque façade, rose window, cloister, and later Gothic and Baroque elements reflect centuries of rebuilding. As the seat of the Patriarch of Lisbon, the cathedral holds deep cultural and spiritual significance for the city. Visiting Lisbon Cathedral offers a clear sense of Lisbon’s layered past, where medieval foundations, religious heritage, and changing artistic tastes all meet in one landmark.

Before you enter

  • Check opening hours carefully; Lisbon Cathedral is closed on Sundays.
  • Arrive at opening for a quieter visit and easier photos outside.
  • Wear respectful clothing suitable for an active place of worship.
  • Bring water if exploring Alfama before or after your visit.

What to expect

  • Expect a mix of Romanesque, Gothic, and later architectural details.
  • The area outside the entrance is often crowded and busy.
  • Inside, the atmosphere is quieter and more reflective than the square outside.
  • Views from the upper areas are a highlight for many visitors.

During your visit

  • Keep voices low; visitors mention staff and worshippers value silence.
  • Take time to notice rebuilding details from different historical periods.
  • Pause in the cloister and façade area to appreciate the cathedral’s age.
  • Combine Lisbon Cathedral with a walk through nearby Alfama streets.
