Directions

Museum Rembrandthuis is at Jodenbreestraat 4 in central Amsterdam, a short walk from Waterlooplein.

Museum Rembrandthuis preserves the restored 17th-century Amsterdam home where Rembrandt van Rijn lived and worked for about 20 years. Here, one of the Dutch Golden Age’s most influential artists created paintings, drawings, and especially etchings that shaped European art history. The house offers a rare look at his domestic life and working environment, helping visitors understand how he lived, collected, and produced art in the city. Its cultural importance lies in connecting Rembrandt’s legacy to the streets of Amsterdam itself. Notable features include the period rooms, reconstructed studio spaces, and displays of his etchings, which bring the artist’s world to life inside an authentic historic setting.

Before you enter

  • Arrive near opening time to enjoy the rooms before they fill up.
  • Set aside about 1.5 to 2 hours for the full museum experience.
  • Wear comfortable shoes; the historic house includes multiple staircases.
  • Check opening hours before visiting; the museum usually opens daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

What to expect

  • Expect a restored 17th-century house rather than a large gallery of Rembrandt masterpieces.
  • The visit focuses on Rembrandt’s life, home, studio, and printmaking practice.
  • You’ll move through period rooms and reconstructed workspaces across several floors.
  • Interpretive devices help explain the rooms, artworks, and Rembrandt’s daily life.

During your visit

  • Take your time in the etching displays; they are a highlight of museum Rembrandthuis.
  • Pause in each room to notice period details and the house’s original atmosphere.
  • Use the room-by-room explanations to understand how Rembrandt lived and worked in Amsterdam.
  • If stairs are tiring, pace yourself because the historic layout involves repeated climbing.
