Directions
Designed by architect Jože Plečnik and completed in 1941, the National and University Library is one of Ljubljana’s defining 20th-century buildings. It stands on the site of the former Auersperg Palace, which was damaged in the 1895 earthquake and later demolished. Plečnik gave the exterior a striking patchwork of brick and stone. Inside, a dark staircase leads toward the light-filled main reading room, suggesting a journey toward knowledge. Monumental columns, distinctive windows, and carefully staged spaces make the building memorable in its own right. As Slovenia’s national library and a university research library, it preserves the country’s published heritage and supports scholarship. Its exhibitions offer visitors another way to explore Slovenian literary and cultural history.
Before you enter
- Check current visitor access before setting out; library opening hours may differ from access to the reading room.
- Aim for Saturday if seeing the main reading room is your priority.
- Allow time to explore the surrounding historic streets on foot.
What to expect
- Look for the contrasting brick and stone across Plečnik’s façade.
- The dramatic staircase is a highlight even on a brief visit.
- Exhibitions may feature literature, maps, or other items from the collections.
During your visit
- Keep your voice low: this is a working library as well as an architectural landmark.
- Check signs before photographing interior spaces or entering study areas.
- Pause on the staircase to notice how the interior changes from dark to light.
