Directions
Paulinerkirche began as the church of Göttingen’s Dominican monastery in the Middle Ages. Its Gothic interior recalls the friars’ place in the town’s religious life. After the Reformation, the monastery buildings took on new uses. When the University of Göttingen was founded in the 18th century, the complex became closely connected with its library. The former church was later adapted for library use, preserving a medieval space while giving it an academic purpose. Today Paulinerkirche forms part of the Göttingen State and University Library’s historic ensemble and is used for exhibitions and cultural events. Its significance lies in that layered history: a religious building that became a place of scholarship. Inside, notice the scale and proportions of the Gothic space.
