Directions

From Kew Gardens station, walk about 10 minutes to Victoria Gate; Brentford is nearby.

Near Brentford, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew grew from the gardens of an 18th-century royal estate and became a public botanical garden in 1840. Its long history of collecting and studying plants helped make Kew a centre for botanical science and conservation. Today, its landscapes and historic buildings form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Great Pagoda recalls the gardens’ Georgian past, while the Palm House and Temperate House showcase Victorian glasshouse design and plants from around the world. The Treetop Walkway offers a different view of the grounds. Together, these features make Kew more than a collection of flowers: it is a place to explore the links between garden design, scientific discovery and the natural world.

Before you enter

  • Check the day’s opening hours: closing times can vary by season.
  • Look up glasshouse hours separately; they may close before the gardens.
  • Wear comfortable shoes and allow several hours for the extensive grounds.

What to expect

  • Expect long outdoor walks between gardens, glasshouses and historic buildings.
  • The Palm House and Temperate House contain plants from warmer climates.
  • Families will find plenty of space to explore, as well as places to eat.

During your visit

  • Start with your must-see glasshouses rather than leaving them until late afternoon.
  • Use the garden map to group nearby sights and reduce backtracking.
  • Bring water, especially on warm days, and take breaks between longer walks.
