Directions

From Algés, take a Lisbon-bound train to Belém station, then walk toward the historic quarter.

Santa Maria de Belém is the name of a former Lisbon parish near Algés and of the church within the Jerónimos Monastery. Belém’s riverside setting recalls Portugal’s 15th- and 16th-century Atlantic voyages. King Manuel I commissioned the monastery in the early 1500s, and its church contains Vasco da Gama’s tomb. The monastery’s elaborate stonework is a celebrated example of Manueline architecture, whose decorative details reflect the period’s maritime culture. Nearby Belém Tower guarded the approach along the Tagus. The tower and monastery together form a UNESCO World Heritage site. These landmarks make Belém an important place to explore the religious patronage, craftsmanship and seafaring history that shaped Portugal’s Age of Discoveries.

Before you enter

  • Check current church access before setting out; religious services may affect visiting.
  • Confirm opening times separately for any nearby monuments you plan to enter.
  • Wear comfortable shoes for walking between Belém’s riverside landmarks.

What to expect

  • The name refers to a historic area as well as the monastery church, not a single visitor site.
  • The Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower are separate landmarks.
  • Expect outdoor walking if you explore the wider Belém district.

During your visit

  • Keep voices low inside the church, especially during services.
  • Look closely at the monastery’s carved Manueline details.
  • Allow time to reach the Tagus waterfront on foot.
