Directions

From Algés, take tram 15E to Belém; walk to the Jerónimos Monastery church on Praça do Império.

Túmulo de Luís de Camões lies inside the Church of Santa Maria at Lisbon’s Jerónimos Monastery, near Algés. Camões (c. 1524–1580) is celebrated as Portugal’s national poet, above all for *Os Lusíadas* (1572), an epic that connects Vasco da Gama’s voyage with Portuguese history and mythology. His tomb stands near Vasco da Gama’s, pairing the poet’s words with the voyages they commemorated. The monastery was founded under King Manuel I in the early 16th century, when Belém was closely associated with Portugal’s seafaring ambitions. Intricately carved Manueline stonework and soaring church vaults give the memorial its setting. The monastery and nearby Belém Tower form a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Before you enter

  • Check current church access before setting out; religious ceremonies can interrupt visits.
  • The published hours are Tuesday–Sunday, 10 a.m.–5:30 p.m.; Monday is closed.
  • Allow time to find the church entrance, which is separate from the monastery’s main visitor route.

What to expect

  • The tomb is inside an active church, not in a separate mausoleum.
  • Look for Vasco da Gama’s tomb nearby.
  • Expect carved stonework, a high vaulted ceiling, and side chapels.

During your visit

  • Keep your voice low, particularly if a service is underway.
  • Check the posted rules before taking photographs.
  • Step aside when studying the tomb so others can approach it.
