Directions

From Algés, take a train to Belém, then walk to the Church of Santa Maria de Belém at Jerónimos Monastery.

The Túmulo de Vasco da Gama stands inside the Church of Santa Maria de Belém at Lisbon’s Jerónimos Monastery, a short journey from Algés. Vasco da Gama led the Portuguese expedition that reached India by sea in 1498, opening a new route for European trade and profoundly reshaping connections between Europe, Africa, and Asia. He died in India in 1524; his remains were later returned to Portugal and eventually placed here in the late 19th century. The tomb’s ornate stonework echoes the monastery’s Manueline architecture. Nearby lies the tomb of poet Luís de Camões, linking two figures central to Portugal’s memory of its maritime past. The church remains a place of worship, making a quiet, respectful visit especially fitting.

Before you enter

  • Check the church’s current opening hours; they may differ from the monastery’s.
  • Allow time for the walk from Belém station.
  • Dress respectfully for an active place of worship.

What to expect

  • The tomb is inside the church, not outdoors in Algés.
  • Look for the nearby tomb of poet Luís de Camões.
  • Expect an ornate monument within a larger historic church.

During your visit

  • Keep your voice low, especially if a service is underway.
  • Look closely at how the tomb’s decoration relates to the surrounding architecture.
  • Follow posted guidance on photography and restricted areas.
