Directions

From the City of Westminster, take the District line to South Kensington, then walk to the V&A Museum on Cromwell Road.

Founded in 1852 in the wake of the Great Exhibition, the V&A Museum was created to make art and design accessible to the public and to inspire makers. It moved to South Kensington in 1857 and took its present name in 1899, honouring Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Today, its collections span centuries of fashion, furniture, ceramics, sculpture and other decorative arts from around the world. The building is part of the experience: richly decorated galleries and an ornate café reflect the museum’s long-standing interest in craftsmanship. Its permanent displays and changing exhibitions make it a major destination for anyone interested in how objects are designed, made and used. Visitors travelling from the City of Westminster will find it in nearby South Kensington.

Before you enter

  • Check current opening hours before travelling, especially if planning a Friday evening visit.
  • General admission is free; check whether a special exhibition requires an advance reservation.
  • Choose two or three collections that interest you most; the museum is too large to see comfortably in one visit.

What to expect

  • Expect galleries covering fashion, sculpture, furniture, ceramics and design across many periods and cultures.
  • Allow several hours if you want time to explore beyond the main highlights.
  • Look out for the ornate café and the museum’s architecture as well as its displays.

During your visit

  • Use the museum map to group nearby galleries and avoid crossing the building repeatedly.
  • Take a break between collections; the variety of objects is easier to appreciate at a slower pace.
  • Check gallery signs before taking photographs, as rules may differ for special exhibitions.
