Enjoy its fascinating façades with geometric decorations and early Christian symbols: the fish, the sun, and the crosses. Directions
The Western Fortress Walls guard the landward approach to Old Nesebar, the historic town on a narrow Black Sea peninsula. Ancient Mesambria grew from an earlier Thracian settlement into a Greek colony whose defences protected its access from the mainland. The fortifications were altered and rebuilt over centuries, including during the Byzantine and medieval Bulgarian periods, so the surviving masonry reflects several phases of the town’s history. Near the old-town entrance, look for substantial stone-and-brick walls and remnants of gateways and defensive towers. They show why this approach mattered to a strategic coastal settlement. Old Nesebar’s layered heritage is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1983.
Before you enter
