Kuldīga: Self-Guided Audio Walk Through Waterfalls and Wood
Kuldīga: Self-Guided Audio Walk Through Water...

This self-guided audio walk explores Kuldīga’s old town, river landmarks, and historic streets. It is ideal for first-time visitors who enjoy small-city charm, wooden architecture, local history, and scenic views you can take in at your own pace. The route begins at Kuldīga Old Town Hall Square, where cobbled streets, low historic buildings, and the calm scale of the town set the mood. From there, you pass the oldest wooden house in Kurzeme, continue toward the brick bridge over the Venta, and move through the old center past shops, museum collections, and streets lined with red roofs and timber details. Along the way, you reach the wide Venta waterfall, one of Kuldīga’s best-known natural sights, then continue to the Alekšupīte waterfall and St. Catherine’s Lutheran Church. The walk finishes back near Old Town Hall Square after a loop through the heart of Kuldīga. On the way, the most memorable moments are likely to be the sound of water rushing over stone, the view from the old brick bridge, the sight of the tiny river running between houses, and the warm texture of one of Latvia’s most beautifully preserved historic towns.

Directions

From Kuldīga’s old town, walk toward the Venta River and Ventspils iela 16; the cascade is near the riverfront.

Alekšupīte waterfall is a compact cascade on the Alekšupīte stream, a waterway woven into Kuldīga’s historic centre. Unlike the much wider Venta Rapid nearby, its appeal is the close-up view of water amid the old town. Kuldīga, historically known as Goldingen, developed over centuries as a trading town in Courland; its preserved historic centre is now UNESCO-listed. The stream’s course through the town helps explain why water is such a distinctive part of Kuldīga’s character. Today, the waterfall is a small but memorable landmark on a walk between the old streets, riverfront and bridge. It rewards a brief pause rather than a long excursion, especially for visitors interested in the meeting of townscape and water.

Before you enter

  • Wear shoes with good grip; surfaces near flowing water may be slippery.
  • Check the weather before setting out, as rain can make a riverside walk less comfortable.
  • Allow time to explore the surrounding old town as well as the waterfall.

What to expect

  • This is a small waterfall, not the broad Venta Rapid nearby.
  • The waterfall is outdoors and listed as accessible at any hour.
  • A short stop is enough to enjoy the view and take photographs.

During your visit

  • Stay on secure paths and avoid stepping onto wet edges for a photograph.
  • Look for different views of the cascade as you walk alongside the stream.
  • Continue toward the Venta riverfront to see how the smaller cascade contrasts with the wider river.
