Kuldīga: Self-Guided Audio Walk Through Waterfalls and Wood
Kuldīga: Self-Guided Audio Walk Through Water...

This self-guided audio walk explores Kuldīga’s old town, river landmarks, and historic streets. It is ideal for first-time visitors who enjoy small-city charm, wooden architecture, local history, and scenic views you can take in at your own pace. The route begins at Kuldīga Old Town Hall Square, where cobbled streets, low historic buildings, and the calm scale of the town set the mood. From there, you pass the oldest wooden house in Kurzeme, continue toward the brick bridge over the Venta, and move through the old center past shops, museum collections, and streets lined with red roofs and timber details. Along the way, you reach the wide Venta waterfall, one of Kuldīga’s best-known natural sights, then continue to the Alekšupīte waterfall and St. Catherine’s Lutheran Church. The walk finishes back near Old Town Hall Square after a loop through the heart of Kuldīga. On the way, the most memorable moments are likely to be the sound of water rushing over stone, the view from the old brick bridge, the sight of the tiny river running between houses, and the warm texture of one of Latvia’s most beautifully preserved historic towns.

Directions

Walk from Kuldīga’s old town toward the historic brick bridge; riverside paths lead to views of Venta waterfall.

Venta waterfall, known locally as Ventas Rumba, has long been one of Kuldīga’s defining sights. Its low, broad ledge stretches across the Venta River and is widely described as Europe’s widest waterfall. The river has also shaped local fishing traditions: migrating fish must cross the ledge, and people historically used this natural obstacle to catch them. In spring, visitors may still spot fish, particularly vimba, leaping upstream—a spectacle that has become part of Kuldīga’s identity. The waterfall sits close to the town’s historic centre and brick bridge, linking a striking natural feature with the streetscape for which Kuldīga is known. Its appeal lies less in its height than in its breadth, setting, and changing river life.

Before you enter

  • Check the weather and river conditions before setting out; high water can change the view and limit access to rocks.
  • Wear shoes with good grip if you plan to explore near the river.
  • Allow time to walk through Kuldīga’s old town as well as see the waterfall.

What to expect

  • Expect a broad, low cascade rather than a tall vertical drop.
  • The historic brick bridge offers an especially good view across the river.
  • In spring, watch for migrating fish attempting to leap over the ledge.

During your visit

  • Stay back from wet rocks and the waterfall’s edge; surfaces may be slippery or sharp.
  • Use the riverside paths for different viewpoints.
  • Pause on the bridge to see how the waterfall fits into Kuldīga’s historic setting.
