Kuldīga: Self-Guided Audio Walk Through Waterfalls and Wood
Kuldīga: Self-Guided Audio Walk Through Water...

This self-guided audio walk explores Kuldīga’s old town, river landmarks, and historic streets. It is ideal for first-time visitors who enjoy small-city charm, wooden architecture, local history, and scenic views you can take in at your own pace. The route begins at Kuldīga Old Town Hall Square, where cobbled streets, low historic buildings, and the calm scale of the town set the mood. From there, you pass the oldest wooden house in Kurzeme, continue toward the brick bridge over the Venta, and move through the old center past shops, museum collections, and streets lined with red roofs and timber details. Along the way, you reach the wide Venta waterfall, one of Kuldīga’s best-known natural sights, then continue to the Alekšupīte waterfall and St. Catherine’s Lutheran Church. The walk finishes back near Old Town Hall Square after a loop through the heart of Kuldīga. On the way, the most memorable moments are likely to be the sound of water rushing over stone, the view from the old brick bridge, the sight of the tiny river running between houses, and the warm texture of one of Latvia’s most beautifully preserved historic towns.

Directions

Walk along Liepājas iela in Kuldīga to number 43; Teleports is an outdoor monument.

Teleports is an outdoor sculpture of Duke Jacob (Hercogs Jēkabs), a figure connected to the history of Kuldīga and the wider Kurzeme region. Jacob Kettler ruled the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia in the 17th century, when shipbuilding and overseas trade linked this Baltic state to distant ports. The duchy also established short-lived colonies in Tobago and the Gambia, a complicated part of its legacy. The monument brings that wider history into an everyday street setting on Liepājas iela. It is an easy place to pause, look closely at the figure, and consider how the story of a small Baltic duchy reached far beyond present-day Latvia.

Before you enter

  • Save Liepājas iela 43 in your map app; the sculpture is easy to miss on a casual walk.
  • Check the weather before setting out, as this is an outdoor stop.
  • Allow a few minutes rather than planning a lengthy visit.

What to expect

  • Expect a sculpture of Duke Jacob, not an indoor exhibition.
  • The site is listed as open 24 hours, though daylight makes the details easier to see.
  • Its street-side location makes it easy to include in a walk through Kuldīga.

During your visit

  • Take a moment to view the sculpture from more than one angle.
  • Keep the pavement clear for other pedestrians.
  • If photographing after dark, watch your footing and be mindful of nearby traffic.
