About Fox Theatre

The Theatre’s ticket office is open on Friday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM and on Saturday from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

We advise that you check the theater’s website, call them, or come to the ticket office to talk in person, should you wish to attend a particular show or book a tour: whether or not the theater gets busy depends on the day and type of event.

The Fox Theatre, located in the heart of the Fox Theatre Historic District, was originally planned to be a Masonic temple that ultimately opened as a movie palace in 1929. Its opulent and eclectic design combines elements of Islamic and Egyptian architecture and incorporates various trompe-l'œil art (optical illusion).

One of the finest movie theatres in the country and a popular dance hall in the 1940s, by the 1970s the venue started to fall into decline and was barely saved from demolition by the efforts of the local community. Eventually, it was named a National Historic Landmark in 1976 due to its unique architectural style. It has since been restored, and currently looks pretty much as it used to at its inception. The venue hosts various events, from ballet and Broadway shows to movie screenings and concerts.

A few facts about the Fabulous Fox:

  • One of the crystal stars decorating the auditorium’s ceiling is actually a piece of a Coca-Cola bottle.
  • “Mighty Mo,” the 3,622-pipe Möller organ, is the largest theatre organ of this brand in the world.
  • The very first film shown at the theater was Steamboat Willie, Disney’s first Mickey Mouse cartoon.
  • Although The Fox was the only theater in town allowing both white and black visitors during the segregation era, there was a separate black box office, entrance, and seating. The segregation wall and the "colored" box office window at the back entrance still remain for educational and historical purposes.
  • Elvis, Bob Marley, Bruce Springsteen, Ray Charles, Lynyrd Skynyrd…to name just a few of the performers who played at the theater!
  • The Fox is now the only surviving movie palace in Atlanta.

The address of the theater is 660 Peachtree Street NE/Atlanta, Georgia 30308. If you’re travelling by car, there’s a number of paid parking lots in the vicinity.

If you’re using public transport, MARTA station North Avenue is just 4 min walk away. A number of buses stop in the area, on Juniper Street, North Avenue, and West Peachtree Street.

Our walking tour of downtown Atlanta takes you through the local area, and you can combine it with your visit to the theater.
