Directions

From Rexburg, drive via US-20 to Yellowstone’s West Entrance, then follow park roads to Midway Geyser Basin.

Grand Prismatic Spring is in Yellowstone’s Midway Geyser Basin, not in Rexburg itself. The 1870 Washburn-Langford-Doane expedition gave the spring its name, inspired by the vivid colors around its rim; Yellowstone became a national park two years later. Roughly 300 feet across, it is the park’s largest hot spring and one of its most recognizable geothermal features. Its deep-blue center and bands of yellow, orange, and brown reflect changes in water temperature: heat-loving microorganisms thrive along the cooler edges. The spring has helped make Yellowstone a landmark for both geothermal sightseeing and the study of life in extreme environments. Today, visitors can see it from a boardwalk, while a nearby overlook offers a broader view of its colors.

Before you enter

  • Check current Yellowstone road conditions; park access can change seasonally or with weather.
  • Allow time for the drive from Rexburg and possible delays inside the park.
  • Bring water, sun protection, and a layer for shifting wind and steam.

What to expect

  • The boardwalk passes close to the spring, but its full color pattern is easier to see from above.
  • Steam may obscure the water, particularly on cool mornings.
  • Expect a sulfur smell and warm, damp gusts near the geothermal area.

During your visit

  • Stay on the boardwalk; the ground beyond it can be fragile and dangerously hot.
  • Keep children close and do not touch the water.
  • For a wider perspective, consider the Grand Prismatic overlook if its trail is open.
  • Pause at different points along the boardwalk to see how the colors shift with the light.
