Directions

From Jackson, drive through Grand Teton to Yellowstone’s South Entrance, then follow signs toward Grant Village and West Thumb.

West Thumb Geyser Basin occupies the shore of Yellowstone Lake within a volcanic depression formed by an ancient eruption. Its setting makes it unusual even in Yellowstone: boardwalks pass steaming vents and vividly colored springs with the lake directly behind them. Among its best-known features are the deep-blue Abyss Pool, Black Pool, and Fishing Cone, a hot spring near the water’s edge. Early park visitors described catching fish in the lake and cooking them in Fishing Cone’s hot water; that practice is no longer allowed. The basin is part of Yellowstone National Park, established in 1872, but the region’s human history extends much further: Indigenous peoples have longstanding connections to Yellowstone’s landscapes. Today, West Thumb offers a compact introduction to the park’s geothermal activity.

Before you enter

  • Check Yellowstone road conditions before leaving Jackson; seasonal closures can affect access.
  • Allow time for the drive through Grand Teton and Yellowstone, especially if wildlife slows traffic.
  • Bring a warm layer: the lakeshore can feel cool even when the boardwalk is sunny.

What to expect

  • Expect a short, easy boardwalk walk past hot springs, vents, and Yellowstone Lake views.
  • Look for Abyss Pool and Black Pool, two striking stops along the boardwalk.
  • Steam and changing light can alter how the pools’ colors appear.

During your visit

  • Stay on the boardwalk; the surrounding ground can be fragile and dangerously hot.
  • Keep children close and never touch or throw anything into thermal features.
  • Give wildlife plenty of space, even if an animal approaches the path.
