Directions

From Jackson, drive north through Grand Teton and Yellowstone to Old Faithful in the Upper Geyser Basin.

Old Faithful Geyser stands in Yellowstone’s Upper Geyser Basin, north of Jackson. Members of the 1870 Washburn–Langford–Doane expedition gave it its name after observing its frequent eruptions. When Yellowstone became a national park in 1872, Old Faithful grew into one of its best-known sights and an enduring symbol of the park’s geothermal landscape. Indigenous peoples had known and traveled through the Yellowstone region long before the park was established. Heat from the volcanic system beneath Yellowstone drives the geyser: underground water warms, builds pressure, and bursts into a column of water and steam. Eruptions occur roughly every 90 minutes on average, though intervals vary. That relative regularity lets park staff post predictions, helping visitors gather to watch without treating any eruption time as guaranteed.

Before you enter

  • Check the latest eruption prediction at the visitor center; the interval varies.
  • Allow time to reach the viewing area before the predicted eruption.
  • Bring layers: mornings can feel cold even when afternoons are warm.

What to expect

  • Expect other visitors near the main viewing area, particularly around predicted eruptions.
  • An eruption sends hot water and steam upward, but its timing and appearance vary.
  • The surrounding Upper Geyser Basin has more geothermal features to see.

During your visit

  • Stay on designated boardwalks and paths; the ground near thermal features can be dangerous.
  • Keep children close and never touch geothermal water.
  • If you miss an eruption, check the next prediction rather than relying on a fixed schedule.
