This is not your typical aqueduct tour and quick photo stop. This is the self-guided audio tour to go inside the fortress and understand what it was like to live inside a war machine. Elvas is the most fortified city in Europe, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it was called the Queen of the Frontier because for 800 years it was the key that locked Portugal to Spain. This 10-stop route is 100% intramuros, 100% on foot, and 100% inside the 17th-century Vauban-bastioned enclosure. We don't go out to the outer forts. We stay inside, where the gunpowder was kept, the Moorish castle, the barracks-churches, the hidden Jewish quarter, and the chapel where soldiers prayed before they died.

Directions
Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção (antiga Sé) has long been a religious landmark at the heart of Elvas. Built between 1517 and 1537 on the site of an earlier Gothic church, it is associated with architect Francisco de Arruda and the Manueline style. When the Diocese of Elvas was established in 1570, the church became its cathedral; it retained that status until 1881. Later alterations changed some of its original appearance, but its side portals still reveal Manueline details. Inside, the ceiling is a feature worth pausing to see. Facing Praça da República, the former cathedral connects the city’s religious history with its main civic square.
Before you enter
