Lidice: Self-Guided Audio Walk Through Memory and Remembrance
Lidice: Self-Guided Audio Walk Through Memory...

This self-guided audio walk explores the tragedy, memory, and renewal of Lidice. It will speak most strongly to travelers interested in World War II history, memorial landscapes, and the human stories behind places that seem quiet at first glance. Your route begins at the Lidice Memorial, where open grass, museum spaces, the rose garden, and powerful bronze figures set the tone. From there, you follow the former village area past the site linked to Stanislav Horák's farm, the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, and the footbridge over the Dřetovický Stream. The walk continues toward the cemetery in Vrapice and returns to key commemorative points, including the Memorial to the Children Victims of the War, before ending at the Lidice Gallery and Lidice Art Collection. Along the way, you will move through a landscape where absence is part of what you see: broad fields, gentle paths, scattered memorial markers, and places where ordinary village life once stood. The most memorable moments include standing before the children’s memorial, seeing how art and flowers answer violence, and feeling the contrast between the stillness of the grounds and the weight of the history remembered here.

Directions

From Kladno, take a bus toward Lidice, then follow signs to Lidice Memorial at Tokajická 152.

On 10 June 1942, Nazi forces destroyed the Czech village of Lidice in retaliation for the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, a senior Nazi official. The village’s men were executed, its women deported to concentration camps, and many of its children murdered. The destruction was intended to erase Lidice, but its name became an international symbol of civilian suffering and remembrance. A new village was built nearby after the war; the original site remains a memorial landscape. Today, visitors can walk through the former village grounds and see the cemetery, traces of the church, a rose garden, and the bronze memorial to Lidice’s children. The museum adds photographs and accounts that give context to what happened here and to the community that was lost.

Before you enter

  • Allow time for both the museum and a walk across the former village site.
  • Check current opening hours before traveling from Kladno or Prague.
  • Wear comfortable shoes for the paths around the memorial grounds.

What to expect

  • The museum contains photographs and accounts of the village and its destruction.
  • The grounds include a rose garden, cemetery, and memorial to the children.
  • Expect a quiet, emotionally affecting visit rather than a conventional sightseeing stop.

During your visit

  • Start with the museum for context before exploring the outdoor memorial.
  • Take time at the children’s memorial; it is one of the site’s most moving features.
  • Keep voices low around the cemetery and other places of remembrance.
