Germany commissioned Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich to create a space to represent the nation at the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition. Once the event was over, the Pavilion was dismantled but never forgotten – rather, it was turned into a benchmark that has not only been deeply influential for generations of architects and artists, but laid the foundations of modern architecture. The extreme purity of its forms, its sobriety, the linear interplay between interiors and exteriors, the precise contrasts in the palette of materials exquisitely chosen and brought from the Alps, Tivoli, Atlas and Tinos all combine to form a perfect balance in this jewel of modern architecture, whose reconstruction (1986) allows us to enjoy it today.

About Passeig de Gràcia

Address

Passeig de Gràcia
Open in Google Maps

Best time to visit

Visit Passeig de Gràcia on a weekday morning for softer light and a more relaxed walk.

Crowd level

No booking is needed to walk the avenue. For landmark interiors, reserve 1–2 weeks ahead in summer; choose the first morning entry.

Directions

Take metro L2, L3, or L4 to Passeig de Gràcia; the avenue runs north from Plaça de Catalunya.

Passeig de Gràcia began as a route between Barcelona and the then-separate village of Gràcia. During the 19th century, it became a grand avenue as the city expanded into the Eixample district. Wealthy families commissioned striking homes here, making the street a showcase for Catalan Modernisme. Antoni Gaudí’s Casa Batlló and Casa Milà are its best-known landmarks; nearby, Casa Amatller by Josep Puig i Cadafalch and Casa Lleó Morera by Lluís Domènech i Montaner add to the architectural variety. The contrasting façades around Casa Batlló form part of the block nicknamed the *Illa de la Discòrdia*, or “Block of Discord.” Today, Passeig de Gràcia combines this architectural heritage with broad sidewalks, distinctive paving, shops, and cafés.

Before you enter

  • Start at Plaça de Catalunya and walk north to see the avenue’s architecture unfold.
  • Check individual building hours if you want to go inside; the avenue itself is always accessible.
  • Wear comfortable shoes for the walk and surrounding Eixample streets.

What to expect

  • Look up often: many Modernista details sit above shopfront level.
  • Expect a major city thoroughfare with traffic alongside wide pedestrian sidewalks.
  • Casa Batlló, Casa Amatller, and Casa Lleó Morera stand close together.

During your visit

  • Pause across the street from the façades for a fuller view.
  • Notice the decorative pavement beneath your feet as well as the buildings.
  • Explore a side street if you want a break from the avenue’s traffic.
