Directions

Castle Square is in Warsaw’s Śródmieście district, across the Vistula from Praga Północ; walk there from the Old Town.

Castle Square marks the entrance to Warsaw’s Old Town, beside the Royal Castle. Its most recognizable landmark is Sigismund’s Column, erected in 1644 by King Władysław IV to honor his father, Sigismund III Vasa, who made Warsaw the seat of the royal court. The castle’s red-brick façade recalls the city’s centuries as a political center, while nearby St. Anne’s Church adds another layer to the square’s architectural setting. Much of this area was devastated during World War II and later reconstructed, making the square a powerful reminder of Warsaw’s recovery. Today, Castle Square is a gathering place and a gateway to the UNESCO-listed Historic Centre. Although visitors from Praga Północ can reach it easily, the square itself is in Śródmieście.

Before you enter

  • Check the weather: Castle Square is an open-air space with little shelter.
  • Wear comfortable shoes for the cobblestones and nearby Old Town streets.
  • If coming from Praga Północ, allow time to cross the Vistula into Śródmieście.

What to expect

  • Look for Sigismund’s Column in the center of the square.
  • The Royal Castle borders the square; Old Town lanes begin nearby.
  • Expect a public gathering place, not an enclosed attraction.

During your visit

  • Pause near the column to take in the castle façade and surrounding buildings.
  • Continue into the Old Town on foot to explore its reconstructed streets.
  • Keep pedestrian routes clear when stopping for photographs.
