The Royal Castle in Warsaw stands on Castle Square in Śródmieście, across the Vistula from Praga Północ. It grew from a medieval residence of the Dukes of Masovia into a seat of Polish monarchs and a centre of state government. King Sigismund III Vasa made Warsaw his principal royal residence around the turn of the 17th century. Parliament met here, and the Constitution of 3 May 1791 was adopted in the castle. German forces destroyed the building during the Second World War; its painstaking reconstruction drew on surviving fragments, archival records and paintings. Today, restored royal apartments, ceremonial rooms and art collections illuminate the political and cultural life of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The castle forms part of Warsaw’s UNESCO-listed historic centre.
