Directions

From Praga Północ, cross the Vistula to the Old Town and follow Nowomiejska Street north to the Barbican.

Warsaw Barbican stands on Nowomiejska Street between Warsaw’s Old Town and New Town, across the Vistula from Praga Północ. Built in the mid-16th century as part of the city’s defenses, its rounded brick walls and towers protected an approach through the medieval fortifications. As military technology changed, the Barbican lost its defensive importance, but it remained a landmark in Warsaw’s historic streetscape. The structure was heavily damaged during the Second World War and reconstructed in the 1950s, reflecting the wider effort to rebuild the devastated Old Town. Today, its red-brick arches and battlements offer a striking reminder of both Warsaw’s earlier defenses and its postwar restoration. It forms part of the Historic Centre of Warsaw, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Before you enter

  • Check the weather: most of the visit is outdoors.
  • Wear comfortable shoes for the Old Town’s cobblestones.
  • Look up its position between the Old Town and New Town before setting out.

What to expect

  • Expect a compact historic gateway rather than a large fortress complex.

During your visit
