Directions

From Praga Północ, cross into the Old Town and walk to Świętojańska 8; the cathedral is in Śródmieście.

St. John’s Archcathedral stands in Warsaw’s Old Town, across the Vistula from Praga Północ. Its origins reach back to the 14th century, when it served as a parish church; it later became a collegiate church and, in the 19th century, an archcathedral. The church witnessed major moments in Polish history, including the coronation of Stanisław August Poniatowski, Poland’s last king. Among those buried here are writer Henryk Sienkiewicz and composer-statesman Ignacy Jan Paderewski. The building was devastated during the 1944 Warsaw Uprising and reconstructed after the war. Its stepped brick façade recalls medieval Gothic architecture, while the crypts and memorials make the interior a place of national remembrance as well as worship.

Before you enter

  • Check the cathedral’s current opening hours and service schedule before setting out.
  • Head for Świętojańska 8 in the Old Town, not an address in Praga Północ.
  • Wear clothing suitable for an active place of worship.

What to expect

  • Look for the distinctive stepped brick façade along the narrow Old Town street.
  • Inside, expect a working cathedral with memorials and a solemn atmosphere.
  • The building is a postwar reconstruction, not an untouched medieval interior.

During your visit

  • Keep voices low, especially when a service is taking place.
  • Allow time to read the memorials and identify notable burials.
  • Ask before taking photographs during worship, and avoid using flash.
